Bites Nearby: Jersey Mike’s Subs

A new sub shop in the Kentlands celebrated its grand opening this week.

Fresh off the meat slicer, at this week’s grand opening of Jersey Mike’s Subs in Kentlands Shopping Center you’ll find everything a great sub should be … and a little bit more.

In 1956 at Point Pleasant on the Jersey shore, Mike’s Subs began with the novel notion of turning out the highest quality, freshest submarine sandwiches for the seasonal influx of tourists and beachgoers. Noticing the business was up for sale in 1972, a 17 year old student, Peter Cancro, asked his football coach for help in purchasing Mike’s Subs and by 1987 the Jersey Mike’s franchise was launched.

Jersey Mike’s uses its own top-quality, premium brand meats, freshly-sliced ingredients and bread baked daily on the premises, then prepares your sub while you watch. Their roast beef is certified Angus trimmed and cooked right in the store. The result is the tastiest and freshest subs you’ll find anywhere.

Start with "The Original Italian" (Number 13), Jersey Mike’s most famous and most ordered sandwich of provolone, ham, proscuittini, cappacuolo, salami and pepperoni. Then ask for it “Mike’s Way” with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, spices, red wine vinegar and oil—truly a superlative sub.  Number 9 "Club Supreme" with roast beef, turkey, Swiss cheese and bacon is another Mike’s favorite.

A great selection of hot subs, including beef or chicken cheesesteak subs and grilled pastrami Reuben sub finish off the sandwich menu. Sub wraps and sub salads are also available for low carb lovers.

Jersey Mike’s Subs takes that one step beyond just serving up great subs. When asked what distinguishes Jersey Mike’s from some of the other sub brands, Kentlands store manager Kyle Yancey says that the difference is the strict employee highering standards and the company’s strong emphasis on customer service.

“We want to build friendly customer relationships that last. The sub is the bonus," he said.

Jersey Mike’s Subs at 249 Kentlands Boulevard is open daily 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
