S'more Please! Celebrate National S'mores Day with These Recipes
Make them on a campfire, oven or even microwave.
Many people believe that the s’more—a sweet “sandwich” made by toasting a marshmallow, smashing it between two graham crackers and adding a piece of chocolate—was invented by campers in the early 20th century when marshmallows became popular with consumers.
While the true origin of the name is unclear, it is likely a contraction of the words “some” and “more.” In 1927, the first recipe for s’mores appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout handbook, and the rest is history.
Aug. 10 is national S’mores Day, and Patch wants to help you celebrate with these s’mores recipes—most with no campfire required!
According to the Montgomery County Government website, campfires (open burning) are legal in Montgomery County without a permit, for the following types of fires:
- Small recreational fires, such as small bonfires or campfires, no larger than 3 feet in diameter. (Note: Recreational fires cannot be used to dispose of wood, brush or other vegetative material removed from your property.)
- Fires in salamanders or similar devices fired with propane or No. 2 fuel oil at construction sites.
- Fires used for residential outdoor cooking as long as the fire is contained in an outdoor cooking apparatus.
- Fires in devices like chimineas and outdoor manufactured fireplaces. These devices, which can be purchased at local home and garden retailers, have become increasingly popular. They should have a non-tipping base, a screen enclosure and a spark arrestor, and they should be placed on a noncombustible surface at an adequate distance from any nearby structures.
If you don’t have one of these devices, or a safe way to build the small bonfire or campfire, you can still enjoy s’mores with one of these indoor s’mores recipes:
Oven S’mores (Food Network)
Ingredients
32 miniature graham crackers or 8 regular size graham crackers, broken in half
2 milk chocolate bars
8 marshmallows
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Lay half of the graham crackers on a cookie sheet. Top with chocolate pieces to cover. Use kitchen scissors to snip the marshmallows in half horizontally, if using miniature crackers, and place half a marshmallow on top of each graham cracker. If using regular size crackers, use a whole marshmallow.
Bake until the marshmallows are puffed and golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with the remaining graham crackers, pressing down slightly to make a sandwich. Serve immediately, while still warm.
Microwave S’mores (Food.com)
Ingredients
1 graham cracker
1 large marshmallow
1 teaspoon hot fudge
Directions
Break graham cracker in half crosswise.
Place one half on a small paper plate or microwavable plate; top with marshmallow.
Spread remaining half of cracker with fudge sauce.
Place cracker with marshmallow in microwave.
Microwave at HIGH power for 12 to 14 seconds or until marshmallow puffs up.
Immediately place remaining cracker, fudge side down, over marshmallow.
Press crackers gently to even out marshmallow layer.
Cool completely.
