Miller Favors Death Penalty For Teacher Killers

While some Maryland legislators want to debate the repeal of the death penalty there is one category of murder Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller would like to add to the list of capital punishment eligible cases.

Miller said Wednesday that he'd like to expand the add teacher killers to the list.

"If someone's going to go to an elementary school classroom and kill a teacher, in my opinion teachers are the front line of democracy," Miller said. "Some thug comes in with a [Bushmaster] assault rifle and mows down the kids, in my opinion they should pay the ultimate price."

Miller said he has six sisters who are teachers.

"There are no armed guards there," Miller said.

Gov. Martin O'Malley is expected to introduce a bill to repeal the death penalty in Maryland—a bill the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will have to take up later this session.

"So when we take up this bill, I'd like to see [teacher killers] added to the list of prescribed penalties," Miller said.

What a load of nonsense! How can anyone say that murdering one person is more deserving of the death penalty than another, based on the victims profession? Now, since teachers are the latest focus in this series of knee-jerk reactions, they should be added to the "special" list? I'm surprised Miller didn't suggest adding legislators to the list. The bottom line is, anyone convicted of first degree murder of anyone, regardless of their profession, should be eligible for capital punishment!

The Patch tolerates stuff like that and does not expect someone to respond? Disappointing at the very least. I only respond in kind to statements like those of Sanchez who was banned when he used the name Joe. You may pay attention, but many of your editors do not. I stated I would not respond to Joe/Sanchez and what do I get, another insult. Pathetic.

Do not respond to insults. Be nice. As I tell my son, each of us is responsible for our own actions no matter what anyone else does. Remember, the person you disagree with is likely motivated by their own set of strongly held beliefs. One may disagree with another user but the repetition of insults and sniping is unbecoming. This doesn't require any discussion or action other than everyone moving in a positive direction from this point on.

Actually, FIFA, there are about 95 countries that have higher murder rates per capita than the U.S., including the more civilized ones like Russia, Brazil, and some of the Baltic states. Unfortunately, our media plays a huge factor in making a bad situation worse. Then our beloved politicians who are not in touch with the people but the media got to "fix" it. If we had a strong death penalty policy and actually put someone to death maybe some criminals might think twice about doing something heinous. So that brings up the question. Who was the last person to get the death penalty in MD?

Reply

The last person executed in MD was Wesley Eugene Baker on Dec 5, 2005. He was convicted of murdering a grandmother in front of her 4 and 6 year old grandchildren in the Westview Mall parking lot during a robbery. Appeals had lasted 13 years. I believe the last person sentenced to death was Lawrence Borchardt, convicted in 2000, who died in prison from Diabetes and Liver disease.

The comment by Mr. Miller is to be expected. Both parties seem to have the same plan - at both the national and local levels - this is why we have the pretend outrage on the death penalty and gun control On the national level, our leaders should be getting together and figuring out how to stop spending so much more money than we take in each year? What can we do? What combination of tax increases and spending cuts help our country get out of this funk we are in? At the local level, leaders should be thinking, ok, the Federal government gravy train that has allowed us to be lazy is coming to an end, we must develop policies to attack this when the massive cuts hit. The problem is they don't have answers - they cannot lead, only humiliate the opposition. So, more time is wasted. Who wins from this attempt to trick us? Republicans go to their loyal base and say "we will stop the Democrats, vote for me." Democrats do the same thing. NRA gets more membership dollars, gun manufacturers make a fortune. Does not help the kids in Chicago getting lit up daily, does not help kids here to find jobs with a career. Unfortunately, most people work hard taking care of families. These are the best people to legislate. But, in order to win an election, you must be in the pocket of someone (Quirk) or very wealthy or a government employee. Mr. Miller should be ashamed of his comments, but the goal of prolonging this has been achieved. Legislators will soon say-out of time.

This is a feel-good statement if ever I heard one.
Now, I love teachers as much as, or better than the next guy. Add another category to the death penalty? Is killing a teacher any more heinous than killing a 6 year old child in cold blood?
Yes, the teachers are the first line of defense for our children, but more violence will not solve the problem.
The death penalty, in and of itself reduces us all to a more base level.
The statistics prove it doesn't deter crime, is racist in the way it is meted out, and costs the taxpayers million upon millions of dollars.
It should be repealed.

I've said it before and I will say it again: The death penalty is a totally outrageous thing that if you truly believe that killing another human being is wrong, is totally incompatible with life on this planet.

Not to mention that it is impossible to correct when levied unjustly. Life without parole is the right punishment for premeditated murderers, it allows us to stay on our moral horse while getting dangerous people out of society permanently.

I think as I get older, my views have changed about capital punishment. If you would have asked me years ago, I would have told you that I believe the death penalty is wrong. But, really, there is a certain segment of the population who commit horrendous crimes, especially against children, and shouldn't walk the earth to continue to prey on others. I urge you to talk to the mother or father of a child that has been raped or murdered. Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of having the death penalty, is that convicted murderers might be more likely to agree to a deal for life without parole (versus the death penalty) rather than serving for good time, and getting out again to victimize more people.

I believe that the family of the victim should be given the decision as to live or die...
some would make it some wouldn't...but the person doing the killing would never know in advance....maybe a deterrent...chances of this happening are about as good as gun control making a difference though..

It seems that there really are no viable solutions to dealing with convicted murder's...life without parole could very well be viewed as more harsh than death itself.
Probably the reason that this will remain a perpetual issue that human beings will never be able to satisfactorily deal with...no one wins either way...all are losers...cost of being human I guess..

Evets - the other problem I see is a society issue. Here we have a cold killer, who had no problem with murdering an innocent victim(s). Even though - the killer knows the consequences of killing someone would take their freedom forever - they did not care enough about their life, or the lives of their family to not commit this/these murders.
So, the sentence is life in prison. Ok, so you have a killer with no hope of parole who committed heinous acts while free. Should we as society be forced to care for this person for life - and put our guards, our staff and other prisoners at risk? What would happen if the prisoner kills a guard? Is protection of the society more important? Should we put even more people at risk in order for a convicted cold blooded killer to live?

There is absolutely no point in keeping an incorrigible felon deemed beyond rehabilitation alive. Such a person has absolutely no worth and is likely to cause more harm and suffering.

Evets, I have read your other posts on the matter, and frankly I can't fathom why you would be opposed to the death penalty, particularly since you experienced the murder of a family member yourself. In my view, some people are hopelessly incorrigible and beyond redemption and have given up their right to be among the living. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

I don't see how a Christian can advocate for capital punishment. I am sure you are as expert in theology in general and Christian doctrine in particular as you are everything else.

I believe the death penalty should be more liberal as there are only three reasons a life is taken justifably, Self Defense, Accidental, In the Act of service to your country! in a declared war. One thing true about imposing the death sentence, it come with a guarantee the criminal will not re-offend!

As Pogo said, "We have found the enemy and he is us". Buck, for the last two days after being reprimanded for attacking individuals you took it upon yourself to begin with this "bait" garbage incessantly. You were ridiculed for it, Pogo was right. Then you added "master" to it on your on. Pogo was right.

Have a good night Buck, I promise not to bother you again for at least 24 hours. The Patch administrators have a difficult job between obscenities (like you deleted) and ridicule like Frank, 1ke, and I hit you with.
