MAFCU Annual Community Shredding Event Expands to Include Digital and Electronic Media

Germantown, MD - According to the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2012, 16.6 million people were victims of identity theft.  In an effort to help members of the community better protect themselves from identity theft, Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union (MAFCU) will include the destruction of digital and electronic media to its Annual Community Paper Shredding Events.  On Saturday, April 12 and Saturday, May 10, participants can bring sensitive paper documents, as well as hard drives, laptops, flash drives, and other data carrying devices to be destroyed free of charge at local MAFCU branches.

“In recent years, thieves and hackers have become extremely sophisticated in how they go about stealing private information.  For victims of identity theft, the financial effects can be devastating.  We hope that by providing this additional service at our annual shredding event, we can offer the community a convenient way to help protect themselves from identity thieves and safely dispose of all their sensitive material,” said Marc Wilensky, Vice President of Marketing.  At this event, all paper, electronic, and digital materials will be destroyed by Office Paper Systems (www.opsus.com), a NAID certified organization.  Digital media destruction will take place offsite in a secured location.  For additional protection, participants are reminded to delete all data and files from digital and electronic devices prior to shredding or recycling.  All paper documents will be accepted.  TVs and monitors will not be accepted at this event.
