Rockville, Md. — The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) awarded a record level of scholarship funds to students attending the campus in fall 2013, as the institution distributed $640,124 to 316 students – up from $444,550 that went out to 212 students in fall 2012. Students who take classes at USG in Rockville may be enrolled at any of nine different Maryland public universities, all of which offer degree programs at the USG campus, a regional higher education center of the University System of Maryland, in Rockville, Md.

“We’re pleased to have been able to provide a substantial increase in scholarship funds this fall to so many deserving students,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, executive director of the Universities at Shady Grove and associate vice chancellor for the University System of Maryland. “We certainly would not have been able to have done so without the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations that support the USG scholarship program.”

USG officials note that even with the increased available funds this year, the institution was still only able to provide scholarships to half of the students who applied, which serves as a reminder that the need for additional financial support is still great.

Students are currently awarded funds to offset the cost of tuition, fees or books from 34 different scholarships that are available. Most students receive partial scholarships, but 20 will be receiving full tuition and fee scholarships, during the fall 2013 semester. USG will award additional scholarship funds for the current academic year in the spring 2014 semester.

Among the more recent additions to the USG scholarship program are the following funds:

·         American Association of University Women (Gaithersburg branch) Scholarship, which provides one scholarship for a female student.

·         Mary Ann O’Bara Bateson Scholarship, which supports students in the nursing, healthcare and biology/bioscience programs.

·         Hilton Worldwide Scholarship, which supports students studying hospitality/restaurant management.

·         Kendall Alumni Scholarship for working students, adding to previous scholarships that have been made available by prominent USG benefactors Camille and Cliff Kendall.

·         Healthcare Initiative Foundation of Montgomery County Scholarship, for students enrolled in the Nursing program, University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing at USG.

·         Kaiser Permanente Scholarship Fund, which is also for students enrolled in a health care program.

·         Karuna Charities, Washington D.C. Scholarships for students in financial need.

·         Maurice Streeter Book Scholarships to help support students who are military veterans.

·         Florence Nesh Charitable Trust Scholarship for nursing students.

·         Montgomery County Business Hall of Fame Scholarship, which supports students in financial need, from any of the programs offered at USG.

·         EagleBank Scholarship, is given to a student who has completed his/her AA degree in the Macklin School of Business at Montgomery College and is transferring to USG to continue his/her education at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park, at USG.

USG will recognize and honor its various scholarship recipients and donors at its annual Scholarship and Donor Recognition Luncheon on November 15.
