The Montgomery County Council agreed tentatively in March to support funding for the North Potomac Community Recreation Center.

may finally be paying off as the Montgomery County Council prepares to approve funding for the North Potomac Community Recreation Center.

The Montgomery County Council agreed in its March 13 session to tentatively support funding construction of the North Potomac Community Recreation Center, according to a press release from the North Potomac Citizens Association.

"The recreation center is one of the county's oldest active capital projects and the need for this facility was documented more than 14 years ago," the release states. "More than $11 million has already been spent on the project, and it is estimated that each year the project is delayed the price tag goes up another $1.3 million."

Drazen, the NPCA President, started a petition in late 2011 hoping to garner community support for the project, which had been put on hold.

More than 200 letters have been sent to the council by North Potomac residents in support of the rec center, according to the release.

Even with newfound support, he's still hoping for more signatures.

Drazen "is urging the community to continue sending emails and signed petitions to the Council 'so that they hear clearly that now is the time to build the center.'"

In November, Drazen told The Gazette progress on the project—featuring a 33,000-square-foot center with a gymnasium, exercise room, social hall, kitchen, community lounge, and spaces for games, crafts, meetings and storage—had been at standstill since 2001.
