Darnestown Boy Donates Bar Mitzvah Money to Purple Heart Foundation

Ben Kaplan, a seventh grader at Lakelands Park Middle School donated $1,100 to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation.

A 13-year-old Darnestown boy saw his Bar Mitzvah as an opportunity to pay it forward.

Ben Kaplan, a seventh grader at Lakelands Park Middle School, donated $1,100 from his recent celebration to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation (MOPHSF), according to a press release.

A family member of war veterans, Kaplan wanted his Mitzvah project to benefit those wounded in battle and dedicated the project to MOPHSF.

"Ben hopes his donation will help veterans receive clothes, food, and entertainment for their families, especially those veterans who are injured and unable to work," according to the release. "His desire to give back has inspired others to get involved as well, including his rabbi, who has also decided to help veterans in need of assistance."

Kaplan's parents told MOPHSF that "although none of his relatives have suffered combat-related injuries, he doesn't want any of his relative to fall on hard times and not have any help."
