“Visualizing the Eyes” a National Museum of Health and Medicine Organ of the Month Club Art Pro

Where/When:  National Museum of Health and Medicine, 2500 Linden Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20910, Friday, July 20, 2012,  10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Why to go:  Your body is an amazing work of art! Each month, the National Museum of Health and Medicine will focus on a different organ. In July, learn about how your eyes function and diseases that affect the eyes. Explore anatomy, medical imaging techniques used to examine the eyes, and pathology. After a brief lesson, attendees will create their own visual representation of the eyes. Open to the public. Recommended for students in 3rd-8th grade. Reservations required; limited to 20. For reservations, call 301-319-3325. All participants will receive a wearable button featuring the Organ of the Month after each program. Attend each program and collect them all!

Soul of Summer featuring Jonathan Butler, Warren Hill and Maysa

Why to go:  Co-Presented with Blues Alley The best of the legendary Smooth Jazz Cruise stars, together on stage at Strathmore! Baltimore-born-and-raised soul singer extraordinaire, Maysa has a passionate following here, and no wonder: her ebony contralto is sensuously joyful (Kickmag.com). South African guitarist and singer Jonathan Butler exploded onto the American music scene in 1987, opening for Whitney Houston. Since then, this masterful musician has grooved new ground in R&B, jazz and soul with his soaring vocals and masterful guitar style (AllAboutJazz.com). Canadian saxophonist Warren Hill has topped the Smooth Jazz, Adult Contemporary and Top 40 charts.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Junior Detective Day at Kentlands Mansion

Where/When: Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road in Gaithersburg, 1:30 p.m. -  3:30 p.m.

Why to go:  Attention Junior Detectives. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to participate in training sessions to receive your Junior Detective Badge.  Put your skills to the test when you visit a variety of stations located on the grounds of Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg on Sunday, July 22, 2012, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Gaithersburg Police Officers will be on hand to help participants make I.D. badges and get fingerprinted, to learn about neighborhood safety, to witness K9 demonstrations, and to explore an actual police car and motorcycle to see all the high tech equipment police officers use.  After completing all training sessions, new recruits will be sworn in as “Junior Detectives” by Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark Sroka.

Admission is $10 per person. This program is best suited for 5 to 12-year-olds and parental guidance is required. Reservations are required, and may be made with cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card.
