Locals Begin Preparation for Hurricane Irene

As area residents prepare for the impending arrival of hurricane Irene, there is a run on area grocery and hardware stores and many events in the area for this weekend have been cancelled.

The Kentland Giant was packed with shoppers at 4pm on Friday afternoon. There was no more bottled water but the store managers had put up signs saying that there would be another delivery of water by Friday evening.

Other items that seemed to be flying off the shelves were tuna fish, peanut butter, bottled drinks (such as teas and juices), and bread. Another, unexpected item that seemed highly popular was rotisserie chicken.

"I've sold 175 chickens!" exclaimed the deli manager.

Most outdoor events that were scheduled for the weekend in the area have been cancelled. They include:

• The Montgomery County School Districts "Back to School Fair" that was scheduled for Saturday, Aug 27.
• Washingtonian Centers Summer Concert Series for Saturday evening.
• Uncorked Wine & Music Festival will be cancelled for Saturday, August 27th 
• The Dedication of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
