The Wizard of Oz is the classic, fantasy tale of a young girl swept away by a tornado to the Land of Oz, and the adventures and characters she encounters in her pursuit to return home. The story and characters are completely embedded in the fabric of our American culture with a significant portion of the audience who will view the show and its characters through the lens of the more recent Wicked. Wootton Theater Director Jessica Speck is working to ensure that the Wootton production is unique. She is “encouraging each actor to find their character and express it as honestly as possible without worrying about the stereotypes that exist.”

Each weekend, the production includes a cast of 60 high school students, an additional 30+ Munchkins performed by local elementary students, with 50 students on crew and 50 in the Orchestra. Jessica Speck, former Wootton Choral Teacher Carla Ingram, choreographer Nancy Newell, crew director Stephanie Daisley, music director Carolyn Herman and producer Sue Thorpe chose The Wizard of Oz because it  “offers our musicians, technicians and actor/singers an opportunity to showcase their tremendous talents while also welcoming in the larger community.”

And, yes, there will be flying! To support crows and flying monkeys, a theatrical flying company will rig the stage with a series of amazing harnesses and pulleys to accomplish this feat.

The music is the same as the 1939 Judy Garland classic, with a few extras thrown in. The show should prove to be a great accomplishment with something for young and old alike.
