Where Were You When MTV Launched?

MTV celebrates its 30th anniversary Monday.

If you can believe it, MTV came onto the scene 30 years ago today with the now-classic video "Video Killed the Radio Star."

The cable channel — at least in its early years — devoted its broadcasts to music videos of all kinds, mixed in with music news and commentary from hip VJs (video jockeys). It was where bands of the 1980s, household names for most Generation Xers and Yers now, made their debuts and where rap and hip-hop came into the mainsteam (do you remember "Yo! MTV Raps"?).

Much has changed since those first videos aired: The channel helped usher in the age of reality television with "Real World" in the 1990s. And who can forget shows like "TRL" and animated series such as "Beavis and Butthead"?

Now, it's actually pretty hard to find music videos of any sort on MTV at all. But on this day, the 30th anniversary, we'd love to find out from you all what your favorite music video has been. Was it Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," which went into regular rotation in 1983? Or was it Duran Duran's racy "Rio"? Or something else?

Let us know in the comments area.
