Bites Nearby: The Fractured Prune

An unusual doughnut shop with an unusual name in downtown Rockville.

Doughnut heaven. These two words best describe a visit to doughnut shop in Rockville.

Fractured Prune’s motto, “You create ‘em, We make ‘em,” translates to hot, hand-dipped, made-to-order, cake-style doughnuts while you wait. And these doughnuts are worth waiting for.

The path to doughnut heaven is paved with 15 glazes and 12 toppings and sugars to choose from: glazes like strawberry, blueberry, chocolate, maple, caramel, banana, mint, cherry and toppings/sugars including nuts, mini-choco chips, oreo, coconut, graham crackers, powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar. Create your own heavenly delight.

Or choose from one of Fractured Prune’s proven favorites, like the Sundae (honey glaze, peanuts, mini-chips), Black Forest (raspberry glaze, coconut, mini-chips), Strawberry shortcake (strawberry glaze, graham crackers, powdered sugar), French toast (maple glaze, cinnamon sugar), Pebble Beach (honey glaze, cinnamon sugar and mini-chips)…just to name a few.

If you consider doughnuts strictly breakfast or dessert food, Fractured Prune offers a variety of sandwiches, bagels, and beverages for pre-doughnut consumption.

Wondering what is up with the name, Fractured Prune? In 1976, company founder, Tom Parshall, was seeking an imaginative name for his new enterprise and discovered that a woman named Prunella Shriek owned much of the land in that area in the late 1800’s. While in her 70s, Prunella competed against men in traditional men’s sports like ice skating races and skiing competitions. She was also a noteworthy tennis player and ping pong champion. Often, she would return from competitions on crutches or in a wheelchair, so the townsfolk nicknamed her Fractured Prunella. In homage to this very unusual, spunky, feisty old woman the Fractured Prune was born.

Whatever the name, heaven is only a doughnut away at the Fractured Prune.

The Fractured Prune is located in Rockville Town Center at 39 Maryland Ave. Summer hours are Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
