What Does Memorial Day Mean to You?

How to celebrate Memorial Day all year round.

It's way too easy to put out a reminder that Memorial Day was established to honor, respect and remember those who have fallen in defense of our country. I'd like to share a couple related thoughts.

1.  The best way to honor those who have died is to thank those in uniform today.  If you are fortunate enough to know the family of a fallen warrior, thank them too - let them know their sacrifice is appreciated - and improve on that by demonstrating your appreciation every day - not just on Memorial Day. You can donate or volunteer at the VA hospital, the USO, the Wounded Warrior Project, or Honor Flights.

2.  Tell your children. One of the most moving moments in our weekly Jewish worship service is when we remove the torah from the ark and recall that it has been handed down from generation to generation for 3,000 years. Sharing the story is a pretty good system. In addition to your showing respect and gratitude for those who protect and defend our country, it is important to share your values with your children and explicitly remind them that Memorial Day is not just the day the pool opens.

3.  While you are busy sharing with your children, remember that the United States of America is not just a place - it is an idea that also needs to be defended. That idea, that all of mankind is endowed by its creator with human rights that are not the government's to give or take away, is unique in the history of mankind. Even the free nations of Europe today do not hold such a basic ideal underpinning their systems of government. Freedom to worship, to protest, to pursue any industry or interest so long as you don't infringe your neighbors right to do the same is a uniquely American idea and it needs to be defended.

Pay your respects to those who defend us in uniform by defending these ideals in your neighborhoods, your schools and other public institutions. Those who would do away with the American way are not always marching in formation over a hill or border and they don't always carry guns. Remember what we fought the great wars for - the Revolution, the Civil War and WWII - and be sure you and your children are worthy of the sacrifices made on your behalf.

Then enjoy a parade or a picnic or the pool! Celebrating and enjoying your family and friends is also a great American tradition.
