5 Useful Things to Know Today: Aug. 26

Gear up for the beginning of school, prepare for a possible hurricane, and try to enjoy the end of summer.

  1. This morning is very foggy in North Potomac and Darnestown. The morning should clear a little and be partly sunny and warm with high temperatures in the 80s. Then the afternoons, we will start getting rains.
  2. Don't let today's nice weather fool you. Maryland will get the edges of hurricane Irene this coming weekend, if not the full impact of the storm. Today is the for the possibility of high winds, rain and loss of electricity.
  3. Various Elementary Schools in North Potomac and Darnestown will be having kindergarten previews and general open houses for students to meet their teachers and peers. Some of the schools are Thurgood Marshall, (general Open House 2:00pm–3:00pm), Dufief,  (kindergarten meetings for new students and kindergarten families at 8:30am–9:00am and and a general open house at 1:45 for older students), and Stone Mill , (meetings for new students and kindergarten families at 10:30 and a general Open House 1:45pm). Contact your school for exact times if not listed here.
  4. There will two Summer Concerts at the Washingtonian Center this evening. Willie Barry, a local teenager with a "Dylan-esque"musical style,will perform from 6pm to 8pm on the Plaza and Sons of Pirates will perform their laid back summer rock on the patio at RIO Center near the Paddleboats from 6pm to 9pm.
  5. There will be muscial theater at Kentlands Arts Barn at 8pm tonight with a performance of The Last Five Years. The story is about the break up of a marriage presented as a musical play. Additional shows are on Saturday night at 8pm and on Sunday at 2pm. The Arts Barn is located at 311 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg. Tickets are $18, $16 for City of Gaithersburg residents.
