Celebrating Purim: Dancing, Carnivals and Hamantaschen

Schedule of events at Temple Beth Ami, Chabad of Upper Montgomery and Shaare Torah.

This weekend begins the Jewish celebration of Purim. The holiday commemorates the the day detailed in the Book of Esther when the Jewish people were saved from annihilation.

In honor of the holiday, several local temples are holding dance parties, readings and carnivals for kids. Below is a list of Purim event schedules at three local synagogues.

Saturday, March 19

  • 6:15 –7 p.m. - "Hello, Deli!" Sandwich buffet $10 for members, $12 for non-members
  • 7 p.m. - Megillah Reading & Havdalah
  • 8 p.m. - Shalom, Esther (Hello, Dolly) Purim Shpiel
    Hamentashen Oneg
  • 9 - 11 p.m. - “A Night in Shushan”. Adults only dance evening, featuring drinks, Middle Eastern hors d’ouevres and Belly Dance performance and lesson. $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

  • 4 - 6:15 p.m. - Purim Carnival & Cafe
  • 6:30 - 7 p.m. - Megillette (for preschoolers) and A Little Megillah (for grades 1 - 6)
  • 7:15 - 8 p.m. - Shalom, Esther (Hello, Dolly) Purim Shpiel
  • 8 p.m. Hamentashen Oneg/Good Night

Chabad of Upper Montgomery

Sunday, March 20

  • 5 p.m. - Interactive Megillah Reading
  • 6 p.m. - Purim Feast and Ball, featuring comedian Reuven Russel. Tickets are $18 per person, $60 per family. Black tie optional.

Shaare Torah

Saturday, March 19

  • 6:30 - 7 p.m. - Tot Megillah Reading
  • 8 - 9:30 p.m. - Family Megillah Reading
  • 9:30 - 11 p.m. - The Whole Megillah Costumes are encouraged

Sunday, March 20

  • 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. - Purim Party, featuring carnival games, music, Hamantaschen, a moonbounce, costume contest and a special activity room for children 5 and younger. Tickets are $8 for pre-registration ($30 maximum per family) and $9 at the door ($35 maximum per family). Children 2 and under are free.
