Census Reveals North Potomac Population is Larger, More Diverse

Population is now one-third Asian.

The population of North Potomac has grown and become more racially diverse over the past 10 years. In fact, one-third of the population of North Potomac is Asian.

Data from the 2010 Census recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that 24,410 people live in North Potomac. That is up more than 1,000 from the 23,044 people reported living in North Potomac in 2000.

The greatest growth in ethnicity was seen in the Asian population, which now represents 5 percent more of the population than it did in 2000. The Black and Hispanic populations each grew to represent 1 percent more of the overall population

According to 2010 Census data, in North Potomac 56.8 percent of the population identified themselves as white, 33.9 percent as Asian, 5.5 percent as black or African American, 4.8 percent as Hispanic or Latino and 2.9 percent as mixed-race.

That is a major shift from 2000, when nearly 65 percent of residents were reported to be white. Asians were reported as 27.6 percent of the population, black or African American as 4.2 percent and Hispanic or Latino as 3.9 percent.

This increase in racial diversity was consistent throughout Montgomery County, which was revealed in the 2010 Census to be no longer majority white.
