Darnestown Civic Association Joins Twitter

Plans to use social media as a tool to share timely information to community.

When the Darnestown Civic Association was founded nearly 45 years ago, Darnestown was still a sleepy farming town, and word was spread from neighbor to neighbor. As the years went on and the community grew, a home-delivered newsletter and then a website was a sufficient way to keep everyone informed on community news.

But with our increasingly fast-paced society, news has become instantaneous.

So to keep up with the now nearly 7,000 residents of Darnestown, the Civic Association made the communication jump. They joined Twitter.

Yep, updates from the DCA can now be found at twitter.com/dtowncivic.

But don't expect any tweets on what DCA board members had for breakfast. Joe Jurgena, who is managing the account, said the purpose of the account will be communicate information on upcoming events or during emergencies.

"Many of the issues we address are time sensitive. We are making efforts to improve our ability to communicate quickly and effectively," Jurgena told Patch via email. "We tend to be pretty active during emergencies via email. I would envision using it to remind residents we are a resource and as a way to communicate useful information."

The account went live last Friday, March 4 with the tweet "Hello World!"

Since then, @dtowncivic has tweeted about the upcoming DCA Spring Social and about the DCA Board's plans to meet with fire investigator about the recent brush fire.

The group is still new, so we won't give them a hard time about their mere two followers (one is @NPotomacPatch) and their lack of a picture.

For now, we'll just say welcome to the Twitterverse! We look forward to tweeting with you.
