Did You Know?

Little known facts, historic or current, about where we live and the people who live here.

Did you know that there is a winery in Montgomery County?

It’s hard to believe, but the gentle slopes at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain are still within the boundaries of Montgomery County.

Since opening in May 2006, Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard has been making this piece of the county fruitful by growing grapes for great-tasting Md. wine.

The 85-acre, family-owned vineyard specializes in Bordeaux-style wines that have received recognition and awards including Md. Governor’s Cup and Md. Winemaster’s Choice Awards.

Bordeaux-style wines are produced all over the world and represent a blend of five varieties of grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are the winery’s white wine award winners.

While sampling the wines that Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard has to offer, visitors may bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful Md. landscape or take part in one of the winery’s many events occurring throughout the year.

There is never a dull moment during the summer months with a weekly farmers market, the Wine and Music Festival Series and the Dogs Day of August Pet Contest on Aug. 27. Also, the winery is available year-round for tours, private group bookings and special events.

“Our biggest event of the year is definitely the annual Stomp Festival,” said Tasting Room Manager Susan Reed. She added “You don’t want to miss it.” Visitors can participate in the wine-making process feet first and perfect their stomping technique at the same time. This year’s Stomp Festival will be held Oct. 1, 2, 8 and 9.

Montgomery County’s only winery, Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, is located at 18125 Comus Road in Dickerson, Md. From June to Aug., the winery will be open daily starting at noon and ending at 6 p.m. For details, a calendar of events and directions go to www.smvwinery.com.
