Did You Know?

Little known facts, historic or current, about where we live and the people who live here

Did you know that the Seneca Schoolhouse Museum will transport your child back in time?

Seneca Schoolhouse Museum on River Road in Poolesville, Maryland, is an authentically restored 19th century schoolhouse that pays homage to a piece of American heritage, the one-room school house.

In an effort to promote history education, Seneca Schoolhouse creates an experience of life in the 1800s.

With a teacher fully schooled in the curriculum of the day, and in full costume, students may step back in time and participate in a day at the one-room schoolhouse of 1880.

Modern day students are given identities that they assume for their roles as pioneer pupils. Their counterparts from the late 1800s were mostly from local farms and settlements, but because of the school’s proximity to the C&O Canal, some of the students were from barge families who worked along the canal.

(HMD), whose main purpose is to preserve historic buildings and landmarks of western Montgomery County while promoting education in area history.
