Get Out: Weekend Picks for Oct. 14-16

A Broadway event presented by Wootton High School and the Bethesda Row Arts Festival highlight this weekend's picks.

What: For one night only Wootton students and alumni from over two decades will present an unforgettable night of Broadway song and dance from the shows you love!

Enjoy performances by Wootton alum and celebrated Broadway and television actress Cicily Daniels. Ms. Daniels, who was an original cast member of Broadway’s The Little Mermaid and appears on ABC’s Ugly Betty, will perform selections from her acclaimed one woman concert. Also featured are Wootton’s acappella groups, Supertonics, Acabellas and Chaos. - From flyer

Price: Adult tickets are $25. Student tickets are $10. Discounts are offered for alumni, senior citizens and groups.

2. Opera and Ballet Cinema Series at the AFI

Where: AFI Silver Theatre located on 8803 Colesville Rd. in Silver Spring.

When: Saturday, Oct. 15. Start times vary. Contact theatre at 301-495-6720.

What:  Enjoy the Opera and Ballet cinema series at the AFI. The series highlights landmark productions from some of today’s greatest voices from the grand opera houses across Europe, as well as filmed performances of live ballets from Europe's top companies.

Price: AFI Opera series tickets are $20; Ballet series tickets are $15.

Where: Bethesda Avenue, Woodmont Avenue, and Elm Street on Bethesda Row in downtown Bethesda.

When: 11a.m. - 6p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and 11a.m. - 5p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

What: 185 artists and craftspersons from around the region and the country will selll their work this weekend as Bethesda Row transforms into an outdoor art gallery.

Price: Free

4. Ellen's Run 2011

Where: Meadowbrook Local Park, 7901 Meadowbrook Ln., Chevy Chase (5K run and 3K walk both start at the Candy Cane City Pavilion)

When: Sunday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m. Register in-person at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School on Saturday, Oct. 15, from noon to 3 p.m., or at the race site on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

What: Ellen's Run is an annual 5K run and 3K walk held in memory of Ellen Vala Schneider, Bethesda-Chevy Chase-area volunteer and mother of two Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School graduates, who died in February 2006. The race raises money for the B-CC High School Community Scholarship Fund, which she chaired, and the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, where she served on the board.

Price: Before Oct. 16: $35 for adults, $15 for students (13-18 years old) and $10 for children (3-12 years old). On Oct. 16: $40 for adults, $20 for students and $10 for children.

Where: Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Ln, Rockville, MD.

When: Saturday, Oct 15, 12:00 p.m.

What: Meadowside Nature Center invites children and families to view Meadowside's hawk, owl, vulture and bald eagle during feeding time. Learn about birds of prey from a nature center expert, and listen to some of the stories about the raptors on exhibit. Talks begin at the Raptor Walkway behind the nature center.
