Grab and Go Kids Planner: March 25 - 27

Five things to do with the kids this weekend.

 You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research to find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance with your kids this weekend.

Each week, we put together a weekly calendar of five kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children for the coming weekend. Here are our picks for this coming weekend.

1. Family Day at National Cherry Blossom Festival

When: Saturday, March 26, 2011 – 10 am to 3:30 pm

Why Go: This is the sixth year they've included a Family Day geared for kids during the Nat'l Cherry Blossom Festival. There will be all kinds of music and dance performances, crafts, and demonstrations celebrating Spring and Japanese Culture.

2. Blossom kite festival

Where: Washington Monument grounds, Constitution Avenue & 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC

When: Sunday, March 27, 2011 – 10 am to 4 pm

Why Go: The Cherry Blossom Festival has put together a kite show and competition for the first time. They have invited kite fliers from around the country and the globe to demonstrate and compete with kites on the National Mall. Kids are encouraged to bring their own kites and see how you measure up against their “Hot Tricks Showdown” or the “Rokkaku Battle.” There are 5 areas to explore: the Competition Field, Demonstration Field, Kite Club Display Area, Activity Tents, and Public Field.

3. Seventh grade girls Bead For Life party

Where: Grace United Methodist Church 119 N Frederick Ave, Gaithersburg, MD

When: Sunday, March 27, 2011 – 2pm to 4pm

Why Go: Women of Uganda create beautiful beads from recycled paper and make jewelry out of them for sale here in the U.S. This Bead Party is sponsored by a group of 7th grade girls from Ridgeview Middle School and the McLean School to help eradicate poverty around the world.  Jewelry costs from $5 to $20.

4. 'Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory' presented by Quince Orchard High School Theater Department

Where: Quince Orchard High School, 15800 Quince Orchard Road, North Potomac, MD

When: Friday, March 25, 2011 and Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 7pm, Saturday, March 26 at 2pm

Why Go: QO's talented student actors and crew present this classic kid's story as a musical play. It's sure to be a lot fun for everyone. This school has some great singers, too.

5. Thurgood Marshall Elementary School's Multi-Cultural Night

Where: Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, 12260 McDonald Chapel Drive, Gaithersburg, MD

When: Saturday, March 26, 2011 – 5pm to 7pm

Why Go: This yearly event includes displays from around the world, with food, music and costumes. Come and learn about the cultures represented in our neighborhood.
