Happy Labor Day

As we celebrate the American worker this Labor Day, let us not forget the unemployed and underemployed.

Happy Labor Day to all!

As a short history lesson, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Now, more than 100 years later, the day is recognized as a holiday by the federal government.

For you history buffs, the Department of Labor has compiled a website of some more fun facts about the day—which includes a photographic look back at Labor Day throughout history.

We hope you are able to enjoy this day, by attending a a parade () or staying closer to home and firing up the grill for family and friends. But we also hope you'll take a moment today to remember those Americans who are unemployed and underemployed.

The most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which came out on Friday, showed that nationwide, there was no net job gain in August 2011 overall. It's a difficult time for many in the country who have lost jobs or can only find part-time work.
