Health Connection: Fitness

Neighbors making a difference in our community's health and wellness.

Welcome to our new weekly feature highlighting people in our community who are making a difference in health and wellness.

When North Potomac Fitness First employee, Demetrius Eady, graduated from Watkins Mill High School he did not imagine that one day he would be promoting physical fitness as a personal training manager. His interest in training was first sparked in high school, but it was not until after high school that he began fitness and exercise regimens, and a short exposure to boxing, that would point him to his career.

Eady admits that his initial reasons for entering the fitness field were personal; he wanted to look good and feel good. But in reality, that is precisely the reason most people work out and stay fit.

A number of clients come to the Fitness First staff of trainers for health reasons, many need to lose weight, some are suffering from diabetes, chronic health issues, heart problems, etc. So first and foremost, fitness for health reasons could be a matter of life and death.

Eady hopes that he is making a difference by “helping people change their lives for a better quality of life.”

Fitness First has a wide range of clients, young and old, fit and not. Some of Eady’s clients are well-trained athletes who are still competing in their high school sports programs. One of the most rewarding parts of his job is helping Fitness First members use the equipment properly and do the exercises with good form, correcting them when they are wrong, so they don’t injure themselves.

About 80% of his clients are female. Eady surmises that men “could be a little more independent and don’t want to ask for help.” Certified by the National Strength Professional’s Association, he feels he is more than capable of helping out the guys as well as the gals.

“Our job is to motivate,” said Dave Posin, General Manager of North Potomac Fitness First, “by developing great relationships between members and staff, so our members have a great and positive workout and they want to come back.”  He added, “Demetrius Eady is someone who helps us accomplish that.”
