MoCo Headlines: Dual Wheaton Redevelopment Plans, New Rockville City Clerk, Bethesda Lots To Close

Catch up on news you might have missed this week, including an Internet safety forum hosted by Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, dual plans for Wheaton redevelopment, a new Rockville City clerk and the pending closure of Lots 31 and 31A in downtown Bethesda as a major construction project begins.

Lots 31 and 31A, two popular surface parking lots across from Bethesda’s Barnes and Noble, are slated to close April 10 as developers begin work on a major public parking garage project.

With two plans for Wheaton redevelopment on the table, representatives from the county's executive and legislative branch say that, rather than pitting one plan against the other, they are working together to come to a collaborative solution for Wheaton's downtown.

Attorney General Holds Community Forum on Internet Safety and Privacy

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler hosted "Facebook: 101," a community forum encouraging parents and kids to exercise caution online and utilize privacy settings on Facebook to prevent issues including cyber bullying and impersonation. Read more on North Potomac-Darnestown Patch.

Man Assaulted in Takoma Park Attempted Robbery

Takoma Park Police are searching for three men who attempted to rob a man on Monday evening, March 21, in the 6400 block of 4th Avenue. Two suspects assaulted a victim, who was walking on the street, and tried to forcibly remove property from him, according to police. Read more on Takoma Park Patch.

Republican Del. Patrick L. McDonough of Baltimore County is challenging the right of Maryland municipalities—like the Town of Somerset and the Village of Martin's Additions—to allow non-U.S. citizens to vote in their local elections. 

The Rockville City Council named Douglass A. Barber as city clerk. Barber began working for the City of Hyattsville at age 15 and worked his way up to city clerk in the Prince George's County town. He was tapped for a job that has been empty since former Rockville City Clerk Glenda Evans left amid controversy in October.

‘The Under Shepherd’ Set To Debut at AFI

"The Under Shepherd," a controversial film focused on religion, is set to debut at the AFI in Silver Spring. The movie is a tale of two ministers and best friends—LC, played by Isaiah Washington, and Roland, played by Lamman Rucker.
