Patch Picks: Five Non-Profits Making A Difference

Local non-profits are always busy but don't always get the recognition for their efforts. Here at Patch, we believe in volunteerism and giving back. So this week we are giving a shout out to five local non-profits doing awesome work in the community.

1. Friends of the Library, Quince Orchard Chapter: This volunteer run, non-profit organizes programs and fundraisers to support the Quince Orchard Library. Due to recent County cuts to library funding, this group has been called on to help instead of providing only supplments.

2. Manna Food Center: Since 1983, Manna Food has distributed 33 million pounds of food to more than 2 million people in Montgomery County. Manna all year long and to help pack and distribute food in their Gaithersburg center.

3. Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary: Animals live long and happy lives at this 400-acre farm in Poolesville. Supported purely by private donations, this unique non-profit provides a permanent home for neglected, abandoned or unwanted farm animals and wildlife.

4. Communities Ministries of Rockville: This non-profit supports the community by providing those in need with the most basic of services, such as housing, healthcare, education and emergency assistance. They have several houses around the county for homeless residents.

5. Eyes Closed Hearts Open: Founded by North Potomac residents and recent Wootton High School graduates, this promotes youth art. The group debuted in January with showcasing a variety of musical and dance performances from local students.
