PatchCast April 6: Lululemon Updates, Kensington Memorial and Georgetown Death

A summary of the latest news from Montgomery County and D.C.

Here are the top headlines from the towns around you, as reported by the Patch team of reporters, editors, photographers and videographers.

  • : The brother of slain Lululemon employee Jayna Murray spoke with Patch Monday. Prosecutors have charged Murray’s co-worker Brittany Norwood in Murray’s March 11 murder at the store, saying that Murray had reported suspicions that Norwood was stealing to store management on the day of her murder. Hugh Murray said his sister would have been insulted to learn another employee was stealing from the store, but likely would not have started a confrontation with Norwood.
  • : Family members of state highway employees who were killed or injured on the job joined Maryland's Transportation Secretary on Monday to commemorate National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. The week honors the 12 workers killed in the last 10 years while working to repair Maryland. Officials say it's important to get the word out about work zone safety in the same way as campaigns to persuade drivers to buckle their seat belt or not use a cell phone while driving.
  • : The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department broke ground on the new 9/11 memorial. The department also launched a Buy-a-Brick campaign to allow citizens to express their support for the memorial, which will be used in the walkway. Mayor Peter Fosselman was in attendance, as well as Congressman Chris Van Hollen and President of Kensington Volunteer Fire Department Steven Semler. The memorial's dedication is slated for June 25, 2011.
  • : A two-story academic wing, two single-story auxiliary gymnasiums and three classrooms on the lower level is the best option for the possible expansion of Julius West Middle School, a panel of parents, teachers, architects and community members said at a feasibility study meeting last month. Julius West’s current enrollment is 1,038, which is 43 students over the 995-student capacity of the school building, according to Montgomery County Public Schools’s “Schools At a Glance”.
  • : Georgetown University Vice President of Student Affairs, Tod Olson, informed the campus Tuesday in an email that Evan Armstrong North, a 28 year-old doctoral student, died Monday. Student newspaper, the Georgetown Voice first reported the incident.
