Chief: A 19-year-old student was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Update, 5:55 p.m., Nov. 12:

A 19-year-old Montgomery College student was taken into custody by Rockville city police on Monday afternoon after fellow students said the man told them he—in his words—“felt like shooting people just for fun,” a college spokeswoman said.

The students reported the incident to the Rockville campus security office about 2 p.m., said Elizabeth Homan, a Montgomery College spokeswoman.

The man “indicated he was upset over a relationship,” Homan said.

Rockville city police Lt. Eric Over said one of the three witnesses reported that the man said: “I’m going to shoot everyone at this college and enjoy doing it.”

The students who reported the incident said they did not see the man with a weapon and did not know him to carry one, Homan said.

School security staff called Rockville police within 15 minutes of hearing the students’ story, Homan said. City police and campus security worked to identify and locate the man.

He was taken into custody without incident while eating lunch outside on campus, about 45 minutes after students first reported the alleged threat, Homan said.

As of 5:30 p.m. the man was being evaluated at a local hospital and had not been placed under arrest, Rockville city police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said.

The incident is “still currently under investigation,” Over said. “We’re determining if he’s going to be charged.”

The campus was not locked down while police investigated.

“This was a generalized verbal threat,” Homan said. “It was not an organized threat and no weapon was seen.”

College faculty, staff and students received an “incident notification” email within an hour of the man’s apprehension, Homan said.

The incident did not rise to the level of a “crime alert,” which the college emails during lockdown situations, she said. Colleges and universities are required to report such emergencies under the federal Clery Act.

“Students did what they should’ve done” and security acted “promptly,” Homan said.

A county police spokesman referred calls to city police.

Montgomery County and Rockville city police responded to the report and “caught up to” the student, Treschuk said.
