A Potomac doctor convicted in 2001 in the beating death of his wife is seeking to be released as early as this year, NBC Washington reports.

Lawyers for Zakaria Oweiss say he has been a "model inmate," according to the report.

Prosecutors said Oweiss killed his wife, a real estate agent, with a rubber mallet, and then asked his son not to call police until he had hidden the weapon. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
