Police: Germantown Credit Union Targeted in ATM Skimming Scheme

ATM customers noticed unauthorized activity in their accounts.

A Navy Federal Credit Union ATM in Germantown was among three ATMs in Montgomery County targeted in a skimming device scheme, Montgomery County Police said.

The device was placed at the Germantown ATM in November, according to police. On Friday, police released surveillance images of the suspect.

According to the FBI, ATM skimming is when a camouflaged electronic device is placed on an ATM in order to obtain information from an ATM card’s magnetic strip whenever a customer uses it.

The targeted financial institutions—including a Capital One Bank in Silver Spring and an M&T Bank in Gaithersburg, at 215 N. Frederick Ave.—learned of the scheme after receiving complaints from account holders regarding unauthorized activity.

The skimmers were placed at the Silver Spring bank in January, and at the Gaithersburg bank at various times between July and November.

Police have asked that anyone with information to contact the Financial Crimes Section at 240-773-6330.
