UPDATED: Police Helicopters Searched for Suspected Thief In Darnestown

Residents report seeing helicopters and police cars in Pioneer Hills neighborhood early Friday morning.

Update, 4:30 p.m.: An officer at Montgomery County Police District 5 said several people called in around 2:30 a.m. Friday to report a suspicious man looking into vehicles around Pioneer Hills.

The callers suspected the man was looking into cars for items to steal. A theft from auto had been reported earlier in the night, police said.

District 5 deployed several police officers to the scene at 2:40 a.m. to search for the suspect. A Montgomery County police helicopter, already out on another call, added overhead search support to the officers already on the ground.

The suspect was not located.

Original Post, 8:00 a.m.: A Montgomery County Police search helicopter was deployed to the Pioneer Hills neighborhood in Darnestown early Friday morning to help locate a thief, police said.

A theft from a car was reported to police between 2 and 3 a.m. on Friday. A police spokesperson said the helicopter was already out for another job in Montgomery County. Police said the helicopter took a quick look through the area, which sits near the intersection of Route 28 and 118, on the way back.

Police did not find anything. The suspected thief was not located.

Residents of the area reported to Patch seeing a police helicopter and several police officers with searchlights throughout the area just before 3 a.m.

"One was walking all around my property," wrote a resident in an e-mail.
