Update: Fatal Scooter Accident Briefly Closes Portion Of Rockville Pike

A 30-year-old Rockville man is killed after being ejected from his scooter.

Update, 7:25 p.m., Sept. 23:

Michael Charles Dalton, Jr., the driver charged in Thursday's crash that killed a motor scooter rider on Rockville Pike, posted bond and was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on Friday, county police said in a news release.

Dalton's bond was reduced from $1 million to $15,000 during a bond hearing in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville on Friday.

His next court appearance is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 21 in District Court in Rockville.

Dalton is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center in lieu of a $1 million bond, according to an updated police report.

A bond review hearing for the 22-year-old is set for Sept. 23, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the District Court of Maryland, located at 191 East Jefferson Street in Rockville.

Dalton listed his address with the District Court as the
10200 block of Baltimore Avenue, College Park, Md., the updated police report states. Originally, police listed a Pennsylvania address for Dalton.

Update, 12:20 p.m., Sept. 22:

One person was killed early Thursday morning in Rockville, Md. after a collision involving a scooter and a passenger vehicle.

Roberto Nassar, of the unit block of South Frederick Road, was killed driving his motor scooter northbound on Rockville Pike near Edmonston Drive. The 30-year-old was ejected from his scooter when he was struck from behind by a tan, 1997 Buick LaSabre, according to the police report.

At approximately 1:26 a.m., officers pulled over the Buick and observed a motor scooter attached to it near Rockville Pike and Montgomery Drive, the police report states.

Officers and Fire/Rescue personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Rockville Pike and Edmonston Drive for a personal injury at the same time, the police report states, adding that officers later found the two incidents to be related.

The driver of the Buick, 22-year-old Michael Charles Dalton of the 100 block of Gentry Drive, Perkasie, Pa., was arrested and is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center, according to the police report.

The report states Dalton is being charged with failure to immediately stop a vehicle at the scene of an accident involving a death, failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving death, and failure of a vehicle driver in an accident to report a death to nearest police.

While the incident remains under investigation, police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.

 

Original Post, 9:20 a.m., Sept. 22:

An early morning scooter accident caused Rockville Pike to be shut down for an investigation between Veirs Mill Road and Edmonston Drive.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. and involved only a scooter and a passenger car, officer Howard Hersh said.

The portion of the road that had been closed was re-opened at approximately 8:10, Hersh said, adding that police could not comment on the incident any further at this time.
