Bartlett, Delaney Take 6th Congressional District Primary

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, a 20-year veteran of the 6th Congressional District, will return to November’s general election ballot seeking an 11th term.

Bartlett, 85, claimed the Republican nomination with 43.8 percent of the vote, more than doubling Maryland State Sen. David Brinkley’s 19.8 percent.

“I’m obviously humbled and honored by the vote of confidence people have given me,” Bartlett told Patch. “I’m going to continue to work, work, work and win in November.”

Joining the incumbent on the November ballot is Potomac’s John Delaney. The 6th District's Democratic nominee won 54.3 percent of the vote after a contentious campaign against State Sen. Rob Garagiola of Germantown.

“We are extremely excited by tonight’s results but we’re going to wake up tomorrow and start working to win in November,” Delaney said through a campaign spokesman. “We’re going to talk about real solutions for job growth, American values like fairness and opportunity, and how we can have a government on the side of the people.”

Bartlett said he and Delaney have a lot in common, starting with their humble beginnings and experience in the private sector.

“We’ve got very, very common backgrounds, but I have to convince the voters that since I’m older than [Delaney], I’m wiser, too,” Bartlett said.

Garagiola conceded to Delaney around 10:30 p.m. in Germantown, according to a report by The Baltimore Sun.

“I thank everyone who helped the campaign. I met a lot of great people. Look forward to continue serving our great State. Much still [to be] done,” Garagiola tweeted after his defeat.

The Democratic race for the newly-aligned 6th District was  between Delaney and Garagiola.

Garagiola took issue with Delaney’s Potomac residence, which falls outside of the district, and also knocked his Chevy Chase firm for foreclosing on homeowners.

Delaney charged his counterpart with not disclosing his lobbying fees while serving in the General Assembly and called him an “Annapolis insider.”

Steve Israel, the Democratic congressional campaign committee chairman, offered his congratulations to Delaney following the victory.

“Congratulations to John Delaney on his victory today,” Israel said. “John is a proven problem solver with a strong record of job creation and community service who will fight to protect Medicare and reignite the American dream for middle class Maryland families. We are confident that John will win in November.”
