Construction of North Potomac Community Recreation Center Delayed

Necessary funding was not recommended in fiscal 2011-2016 Capital Improvements Plan.

Construction of the North Potomac Community Center will not begin in July 2011 as previously scheduled. The project will now be delayed because County Executive Ike Leggett did not include the necessary funding in proposed amendements to the fiscal 2011-2016 Capital Improvements Plan, Jeffrey Bourne, Division Chief at the Department of Recreation, told The Gazette.

At a , Bourne told residents that construction of the 33,000 square foot facility, which will be built next to on Travilah Road, was on schedule to begin this summer. 

The community has been working to bring a community center to North Potomac for more than 10 years. The department completed the total property aquisition in 2009.

On Wednesday, The Gazette reported District 3 Councilman Phil Andrews said he would work to get the construction funding included in the full CIP, but would not propose an amendment this year.
