Kamenetz Declares State of Emergency

County plans to open a shelter at Eastern Technical High School at 1 p.m.

UPDATED (11:59 a.m.)—Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has declared a state of emergency in Baltimore County.

The county has also announced that it will open its first Hurricane Sandy-related emergency shelter at Eastern Technical High School at 1 p.m. The shelter accepts pets, who will be kept in a separate, ventilated portion of the building. Owners will be allowed to visit with their pets while at the shelter.

Two state-run shelters in the county are are currently open and available to residents. The state-run shelters are:

  • The Retriever Center on the campus of the , 1000 Hilltop Road, Catonsville, MD, 21228.
  • Jewish Community Center, 3506 Gwynnbrook Avenue, Owings Mills, MD, 21117.

Neither state-run shelter accepts pets.

Additionally, all administrative hearings for Oct. 30 and recreation and parks programs are canceled and recreation centers will close at 1 p.m.

The county also announced the following changes to county services:

  • Baltimore County Health Centers and WIC clinics are closing at noon today.
  • Animal Control is open for emergencies only.
  • The County's Medical Assistance Transportation Program is only transporting clients for most essential medical needs. Routine appointments will be rescheduled.
  • All Baltimore County Senior Centers are closed until further notice.
  • CountyRide is also suspended until further notice.

The declaration gives Kamenetz additional powers to regulate traffic, protect the health, safety and welfare of county residents and coordinate with state agencies, according to Ellen Kobler, a county spokeswoman.

Kobler said the declaration triggers "a tracking mechanism for county expenses so that we can seek reimbursement from the state and federal government."

Kamenetz is expected to brief the press at 1 p.m. in Towson.

Steve, since your last several comments were rather off the mark I was offering my assistance to you in making a recommendation. There is help available at any age level and you don't have to pay for it. Why are you replying to FIFA? I thought you were all the same cons.

Steve, any info on KK on where seniors could get help. Any info on phone numbers, shelters, food, medicine, national guard, transportation, flooding, insurance information, how are the invalid going to survive. Not enough time in a news conference to cover those and many more topics in one article or news conference. What about those who do not read Patch. I saw little in the Sun from KK and nothing on the news. Heard plenty on the guns in the schools for days and days. New technology training etc. Non stop coverage on all the local news stations on that. Nothing from the county and even friends asked me why. Did get a couple of robo calls but not from the county. Hear anything from the council? Nope! Sad state of affairs in a historical event and yes I lost power.

The weather is over but the incident is on going. Will be for months. We can only THEN judge how Obama and team handled it right? Steve, tell these people the event is over fool! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2226164/Hurricane-Sandy-victims-Ella-Norris-89-dies-daughters-arms-water-fills-Staten-Island-home.html
