A Darnestown Elementary Rite Of Passage

For fifth grade students at Darnestown Elementary School, taking part in the annual Colonial Day has an added significance.

All students at take part in the annual , but it is a focal point of the fifth grade curriculum.

The fifth grade students study colonial history in social studies in preparation for the event. On the Friday the event takes place each April, only fifth grade students dress up in colonial costumes, explore the different colonial stations and perform the plays.

After seeing the older kids experience the event each year, Darnestown Colonial Day becomes a kind of rite of passage when kids finally reach the fifth grade. We spoke with a couple of those students about the event and their feelings as they prepare to move on to middle school.
