Math Professer at Germantown Campus Named Professor of the Year

Recipient was John Hamman, chairman of the math department at Montgomery College’s Germantown campus

A math professor from Montgomery College’s Germantown campus has been named Maryland Professor of the Year, college officials announced Thursday.

John Hamman, chairman of the math department, received the award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

In 2009, Hamman helped was a leading developer a self-paced, computer-based approach for a developmental math class at the Germantown campus. The redesigned course, which was adopted at all Montgomery College’s three campuses, impacts 2,000 to 3,000 students each semester, the college said in a press release.

Hamman joined a Montgomery College delegation to India in order to explain how the course could fit into a community college system overseas.

This year Hamman has received the Faculty Outstanding Service Award and the National Institute for Staff Organizational Development (NISOD) Award for his outstanding service to the Montgomery College.  In a prepared release, Hammon said:

“My goal ... is to make sure my students have the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of what I am trying to teach and make connections to their lives outside of class, in other classes, and outside of academia.”

This is the fourth year in a row that a Montgomery College professor has been named Maryland Professor of the Year.  Music professor Dawn Avery received the honor in 2011.
