Newsweek Ranks Wootton Among Top 500 High Schools

On Monday, Newsweek magazine announced its annual ranking of the top 500 public high schools in America. is listed as number 102.

Wootton is one of eight Montgomery County Public Schools to be included in the list. It ranked above Walt Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase, but below Winston Churchill and Poolesville.

Wootton received an overall score of 0.747 from the magazine, which has been ranking American public schools for more than a decade. According to Newsweek, in the 2010/2011 school year Wootton students took an average of 4.2 AP or IB tests each and received an average of 1822 on the SAT. The student teacher/ratio at the school is 13.7. Wootton has a 13.7 student/teacher ratio and a 98 percent graduation rate and 85 percent of those who graduated are going to college.

According to its website, the Newsweek ranking is based on six components: graduation rate, college matriculation, the number of AP courses offered and tests taken and the average SAT, IB and AP scores.

The list was put together this year by a panel of experts, including representatives from Teach for America and Open Education Solutions, and a Stanford professor of education. 

Poolesville received the highest ranking of Montgomery County Public Schools, coming in at 64.
