Thomas Wootton Ranked 11th Best High School In D.C. Region

The Washington Post released its annual High School Challenge ranking on Friday afternoon.

Students at can now boast about attending one of the best public schools in the area.

Wootton was ranked number 11 out of 170 public schools in the D.C. region in the 2011 Washington Post High School Challenge.

The high school was listed just behind Winston Churchill and moved up one ranking from 2010, when it was listed as number 10.

Wootton also scored national recognition. The Washington Post ranked it number 103 of public schools in the U.S.

Washington Post education reporter Jay Matthews has conducted the ranking since 1998. But Matthews expanded the list to the entire country for the first time this year. According to the Post website, schools are measured using a formula analyzing college level tests taken by graduating seniors.

Montgomery County Public Schools scored high rankings in the regional and national lists. Five MCPS schools were ranked in the top 100 schools in the country. Bethesda-Chevy Chase was ranked number 59 in the U.S., number two in the D.C. region and number one in Maryland.

In a press release, MCPS superintendent Dr. Jerry Weast said he was proud of the schools' performances. 

“These results reflect the continuing commitment of the Board of Education to providing all students with access to college-level work so that they are better prepared for college and the workforce," Weast said.
