Wootton Earns First Win of Season Over Kennedy, 30-14

Wootton High School's Patriots improve to 1-1.

Quarterback Chris Papadopoulos threw for 282 yards and three touchdown passes, all in the first half, to lift the Wootton Patriots to a 30-14 win over the Kennedy Cavaliers at Walter Johnson High School on Saturday night.

The decision was made to play at Walter Johnson since the school has artificial turf.

The win evens the Patriots’ record to 1-1 on the season for coach Eddie Tolliver’s squad.

“At times we looked like we were clicking on all cylinders,” Tolliver said.

“But we scored all our points in the first half so basically we got shutout in the second half. We need to learn to finish games.”

Wootton led by 14 after the first quarter and added to its lead with two quick scores in the second quarter. An errant snap on a Kennedy punt attempt led to a safety, which gave the Patriots a 30-0 lead at the break.

But Wootton allowed the Cavaliers to hang around and the Patriots failed to score the entire second half, securing just four first downs in the last 24 minutes of play. This is something Tolliver will focus on as the Patriots get ready for a big test in Damascus this Friday.

“We can’t allow teams to breath life into themselves,” Tolliver said. “We need to put teams away.”

Curt Brooks had nine catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Strong safety Joe Stapleton had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
