Darnestown Kayakers Aim For London Olympics

Caroline Queen and Ashley Nee hope to represent Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Two Darnestown women are competing against each other for a single spot on Team USA's 2012 Summer Olympics kayaking team.

Caroline Queen and Ashley Nee are tied for first place in the Olympic qualifying race after Nee took gold at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for whitewater slalom in Charlotte, N.C., according to The Washington Post.

The season's final qualifying event — June 8-12 — is a world cup in Cardiff, Wales.

"Queen and Nee head into the world cup tied with 30 Olympic qualification points. Queen owns the tiebreaker for initially earning the slot for Team USA at the 2011 world championships, so Nee must finish in the top 20 and above Queen to win the Olympic berth at the London Olympics this summer," according to the report.

The girls, both in their early-20s, learned to kayak at Germantown's Valley Mill camp and are longtime friends, according to a report by The Gazette.

"[Caroline and I] have always been mistaken for each other," Nee told The Gazette. "We are like sisters and we are smart enough to keep it that way. However, we both want that single spot. We are pushing each other. Essentially, we are training each other for the games."
