Friday Football Roundup: The Final Week

Down to the final week of the regular season, Quince Orchard looks to finish a perfect 10-0 while Wootton needs a win and lots of help to sneak into the playoffs.

Just 10 weeks ago the 2011 football season was a clean slate, the story had yet to be written. Fast forward to the present, and the tale seems all too familiar.

Perennial Montgomery County 4A powerhouse is 9-0, on the verge of the school's third undefeated regular season and second state championship under head coach Dave Mencarini.

While QO again soared to the top of the standings, improved on head coach Eddie Toliver's debut season in which the Patriots finished 2-8. Still, Wootton finds itself 4-5 heading into tonight's finale where a win clinches just the third .500 season in the last 20 years.

Thomas S. Wootton (4-5 overall, 2-3 Montgomery 4A South Division) at Gaithersburg (4-5 overall, 2-3 Montgomery 4A West Division)

Washington Post Rankings: Both unranked.

Recent Streaks: Wootton has traded wins and losses for most of the season. Gaithersburg has lost five straight games after starting the season 4-0.

Playoff Implications: Both teams are yet to be mathematically eliminated, although both remain severe long shots to earn a playoff berth. Whitman (5-4) and Clarksburg (5-4) are in with a win, but losses by either school opens up the potential for a crazy tiebreaker potentially involving Bethesda Chevy-Chase (5-4), Wootton, Gaithersburg, and Northwest (4-5).

Time and Place: 6:30 p.m. at Gaithersburg High School.
