Monday Sports Roundup: Postseason Basketball, Wrestling, Swim Results

The winter sports season is nearing a close as teams and individuals from Wootton and QO participate in the playoffs.

As the end of February nears, so too does the end of the winter sports season for athletes from and .

Boys' Varsity Basketball

Wootton held on to overcome a late push by Walter Johnson, 48-44, and advances to the 4A West region quarterfinal where they will play Richard Montgomery (Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. at Wootton).

Quince Orchard's boys went on the road and knocked off rival Northwest, 52-44. QO faces top-seeded Magruder in the 4A West quarterfinal (Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. at Magruder).

The winners of Wootton-Richard Montgomery and QO-Magruder will meet in the region semifinals March 1.

Girls' Varsity Basketball

Wootton's Lady Patriots advanced to the region's quarterfinal round with a 57-51 victory over Richard Montgomery Friday evening. Coach Maggie Dyer's squad heads to Germantown to face second-seeded Northwest at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb 27.

The Lady Cougars were bounced from the playoffs, falling to Churchill, 59-26.

Varsity Wrestling

Wootton's Austin Tritto and Quince Orchard's Eli Bienstock won regional championships in the 106 and 120 pound weight classes, respectively.

Tritto's teammate Stephen Potemken was the runner-up in 152.

The following wrestlers have advanced to the Maryland 4A/3A state tournament from Wootton and Quince Orchard:

Austin Tritto (Wootton), Jacob Weaver (Wootton), Stephen Potemken (Wootton), Chen Han (Wootton), Ralph Bernardo (Wootton), Josh Strauss (Wootton), Eli Bienstock (QO), Connor Tilten (QO).

Varsity Swim and Dive

Wootton finished second to Walt Whitman High School in the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championship, according to the Gazette.

The boys' (184) points came in third, and Wootton's overall score (290.5) fell short of Whitman's 321.
