Montgomery County Boys Lose to Prince George's County in All Star Game

Prince George's took the top spot in the first all-star basketball game between the two counties hosted by VoliSports.

It was a game that counted for nothing more than bragging rights, but it certainly didn’t look like it in the second half.

The Montgomery County All Stars led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter but were outscored 26-6 in the fourth quarter as Prince George’s County earned an 84-73 victory in the VOLiSports/FiOS1 All Star Game at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro on Sunday.

“I know it was an all-star game, but it was definitely intense, you know?” Whitman forward Daniel Voigt said. “Both teams were competing pretty hard, trying to represent their county. We had a lead for a while, and I think they kind of got tired of that. Definitely, both teams were playing really hard down the stretch, but it was still fun.”

Friendly’s Davon Morton scored a game-high 17 points for Prince George's, while Fairmont Heights’ Lamont Adair added 12.

Sunday marked the third edition of the VoliSports/FiOS 1 game, but the first time that it featured the Prince George’s vs. Montgomery County format.

“It’s great,” Montgomery coach Christopher Lun (Whitman). “This was the first time they’ve had it, and we’re really hoping that the next couple of years down the road it continues. I know all the guys that played with us had a great time with it, and it was a competitive game with good basketball, so we’re just hoping it’s something that continues.”

Early on, it looked like the Montgomery All Stars would pick up the first victory in the series. They led 25-19 after a hot-shooting first quarter in which they hit four 3-pointers, with Voigt, Derrick Miller (Poolesville), Chris Viqueira (Clarksburg) and James Wallerstadt (Wootton) all connecting from beyond the arc.

Montgomery County led 50-40 at halftime and scored the first two baskets of the second half to extend its lead to 14 points. Prince George's made a move and cut the lead to six points, but Voigt made a 3-pointer – his fourth of the night – to give his team a bit of breathing room at 67-58 entering the final frame.

The fourth quarter was all Prince George's, though. A lay-in by Douglass guard Timmone Whatley with 3:31 remaining put Prince George's ahead, 71-70 – its first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Magruder’s Joe Emurasabe made one of two free throws to tie the game at 71-71, but Eleanor Roosevelt forward Prince Okoroh completed a spectacular three-point play – he made the free throw after being fouled while throwing down a dunk – and Montgomery County never threatened the rest of the way.

“While we were winning, we were like, ‘MoCo’s better than PG,’” Malcolm Miller said, “and I guess when they were winning it was, ‘PG’s better than MoCo.’ I mean, we were subbing five at a time, so we were just going out there to try to have some fun. Basically, our plan was to have some fun and try to win the game.”
