State Basketball Draw Sets High School Basketball Playoff Matchups

Local teams found out their fate on Sunday.

The Maryland basketball state playoff seeding draw was held at Columbia’s Long Reach High School on Sunday, officially announcing first-round playoff matchups for all boys' and girls' teams in every division, 1A through 4A.

In Maryland, every team is eligible for post-season play. Playoffs are broken up by Class A designation, and then further bracketed by state location (north, south, east and west). Generally in each location (e.g., 3A West), the teams with the four best records are given the top four seeds and receive a bye in first-round play. The rest of the teams are seeded at random and matched up against one another in the first round.

The Quince Orchard's girls' team got the No. 11 seed in the 3A West and will play No. 6 Seneca Valley in the first round. The QO boys' strong regular-season record placed them with the second seed and a bye to the second round, where they will play the winner of Tuscarora (7) and Seneca Valley (10).

The Wootton girls were seeded fourth in the 4A West. Due to the small nature of the bracket, they did not receive a bye and will play No. 13 Walter Johnson in the first round. The Wootton boys got the No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 Sherwood.

The Northwest boys' team got the No. 11 seed in the 4A West, and are scheduled to play No. 6 Walter Johnson. The girls received the No. 2 seed and a bye to the second round, where they await the winner of Blair (7) and Sherwood (10).
