The Gaithersburg Police Foundation held its annual fundraiser at Dogfish Head Alehouse on Tuesday.
Kentlands residents Gil Price and Ron Canova wrapped up lunch Tuesday at Dogfish Head Alehouse around 1:30 p.m., but that wasn't the only meal Price planned to eat at the Gaithersburg restaurant. He was heading back for dinner with his family, too. As president of the Gaithersburg Police Foundation, Price wanted to make sure he was contributing to the organizations annual fundraiser at the restaurant. The GPF, through a series of events such as Tuesday's at Dogfish, raises money "with the intention of supporting the Gaithersburg Police Department and the individual officers," Price said. Jean Claude Roy could face a maximum life sentence for the sex trafficking charges, federal prosecutors say.
A Germantown man was indicted on sex trafficking and prostitution charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced Wednesday. Federal prosecutors allege that between Dec. 9 and Christmas Day in 2012, Jean Claude Roy, 30, tried to force three people to have sex for money and that he took them across state lines for sex and prostitution. Roy—who is also known as “Dredd the Don” and “Dreddy”—could face a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison for each of the three counts of sex trafficking, according to federal prosecutors. He has also been charged with three counts of interstate transportation for prostitution, a charge that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence for each count. …

While not necessarily the most popular new traffic safety measure among those ticketed, the red light camera initiative in Rockville has produced an impressive drop in violations at the city’s busiest intersections, according to Rockville Police Chief T.N. Treschuk. “With anything like this, there are going to be mixed reviews,” said Treschuk. “Obviously, the people who receive the tickets aren’t happy, but the people who see those drivers run red lights are happy to see them get caught.” As of May 7, there were five fatal pedestrian-related incidents in Montgomery County. Using red light and speed cameras, targeted stings and other methods, police departments and municipalities hope to prevent pedestrian-related accidents, after a number of fatalities.
Pedestrian-related accidents have seen an unfortunate increase recently, particularly in Montgomery County. There have been 14 pedestrian accidents just this year, five of which resulted in fatalities. There was even one incident in Bethesda where a car struck an infant in a stroller being pushed across a crosswalk. “We, the parents of students attending Bethesda Elementary School, are horrified by the number of traffic accidents and near-accidents in and around downtown Bethesda,” said an online petition launched by Bethesda elementary school parents. “The safety of this walkable haven is at risk.” While there haven’t been as many pedestrian-related deaths in Prince George’s County this year, College Park officials recognize that …

Police said the Damascus resident ran one man down with his car, targeted another.
A Damascus man has pleaded guilty to second-degree depraved heart murder in connection to the December hit-and-run death of a Potomac man in Gaithersburg, the Montgomery County State's Attorney's office said. "Depraved heart murder is the reckless action and wonton disregard for human life that a defendant takes or has towards another," according to a release from the State's Attorney's office. Fernando Josue Valenzuela, 20, of the unit block of Valley Park Court in Damascus, faces up to 20 years in prison. Under the plea agreement, he will not be tried on the original charges of one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. From postal inspectors to small-town sheriffs, Congress has dedicated the week of May 15 to honoring America's law enforcement officers, especially those killed in the line of duty, each year. Three police officers from Maryland were added to National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, including Montgomery County Police Officer William Dewitt Talbert. Talbert died Jan. 27, 2012 at the age of 64 as a result of contracting hepatitis C, according to a memorial page created for Talbert. On June 30, 1983, Talbert was standing between his patrol car and another vehicle—which a drunk driver hit, pinning him between the cars. A statewide gun turn-in program included three drop-off locations in Montgomery County, police said.
More than 100 guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition were turned in to three police stations in Montgomery County as part of a statewide gun turn-in program during the weekend. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler (D) said that he initiated the event in February during the legislative swirl of gun control bills, The Washington Post reported. A restrictive gun control package for the state was passed by the Maryland General Assembly in April. “This gives family members the opportunity to remove illegal and unwanted guns from the home that they fear would be used to harm themselves or others,” Gansler told the newspaper. ROCKVILLE—U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin marked National Police Week with a visit to Rockville’s new police station Monday, where he touted a national law enforcement initiative called the Blue Alert Act of 2013. The Blue Alert Act would create a national network similar to the Amber Alert system to help catch violent criminals who injure or kill police officers. Maryland is already among 18 states to implement such a system. Gov. Martin O’Malley signed an executive order creating Maryland’s Blue Alert system shortly after the death of Maryland State trooper Wesley Brown. Montgomery County Council meets most Tuesdays in Rockville.
Montgomery County Council members will begin to discuss how to spend revenue collected from an ambulance fund that took effect this January at its next meeting, planned for Tuesday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m. in Rockville. The fund is the result of a law passed in 2012 that allows the county to collect fees from the insurance companies of patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS). It was defeated in a 2010 voter referendum, Patch previously reported, but reintroduced and passed by the County Council.
