In 1968, at the height of the civil rights movement, two predominantly Caucasian churches merged with a predominantly…More African-American church to form Fairhaven Methodist Church. After 40 years, Fairhaven still prides itself on its racially and economically diverse congregation and inclusive atmosphere. Reverend Jong Woo Park has served at Fairhaven for 10 years.
Fairhaven offers both adult and children's Sunday school and child care during services. An adult Bible study is offered on Tuesday evenings. During the rest of the week, the church offers its space out to other groups and organizations, including the private school Thomas Jefferson Preparatory, which occupies part of the building during the week.
Fairhaven is active in the community and conducts several school supply and donation drives for local and international charities. The congregation supports Methodist missionaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a girls education program in Kenya.
