Beer-drinking centaur mascot to be replaced by new marketing campaign.
The 138th running of the Preakness Stakes on May 18 will feature two fewer hooves than the previous two years. The Maryland Jockey Club is retiring “Kegasus," the beer-drinking centaur (half-man, half-horse) mascot that was introduced prior to the 2011 race, according to a report by the Baltimore Business Journal. While Kegasus drew national attention and helped to increase ticket sales for the past two races, Tom Chukas, president of the Maryland Jockey Club, told the Journal, “I think we’re at a different stage with the InfieldFest - I think the brand is much stronger.” The mascot was created by a marketing firm in Washington, DC, to attract a younger audience to the historic horse race, but the addition of musical acts popular with a …

Maryland ranks 47th in beer consumption in the U.S.

Apparently, people in the tri-state area do not track with the 17th president of the United States, and select other beverages to meet national crises. Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia all rank in the bottom third of annual shipment and consumption of beer, according to a study from the Beer Institute, quoted by the Washington Business Journal. Kentlands hosted its 21st annual Oktoberfest Sunday in Gaithersburg. The festival featured German entertainment, beer and new activities including horse-drawn wagon rides, pumpkin painting, and wine-tasting, according to the city. Festival goers tried out authentic Bavarian food and beer and performances by the Alte Kameraden German Band and Alt-Washingtonia Bavarian dancers. Did you attend the Kentlands Oktoberfest?
