Four churches in Darnestown are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ with special services Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Darnestown Presbyterian Church is holding three services in the sanctuary on Christmas Eve. A special candlelight service for children begins at 5 p.m. and includes a nursery. Traditional candlelight services will be held at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. St. Nicholas Episcopal Church is holding three services on Christmas Eve. St. Nicholas Episcopal Church offers blessing of the animals on Sunday.
Churchgoers might have to make room for a few extra paws and tails in the pews this weekend. On Sunday, in honor of the Feast Day of Saint Francis, many churches will be conducting a Blessing of the Animals. In Darnestown, St. Nicholas' Episcopal Church will be welcoming pets and farm animals of all sizes to join the 11 a.m. service. Rev. Ken Howard said last year they had three horses in addition to many household pets. Some people bring their horses up the dirt road to the church off Rt. 28. He said, in the past people have also walked them over from nearby farms. "Usually there are always lots of dogs and cats," said Howard.
