How would you feel if Clarksburg were to become Montgomery County’s “next major shopping destination?"
For Clarksburg residents, the promise of suburban life should include a placeholder for shopping malls. Retail developers are in negotiations to buy 40 acres of Clarksburg land from Adventist HealthCare, news outlets have reported. Or as The Washington Post put it: “The quiet community of Clarksburg has become ground zero in a battle to build Montgomery County’s next major shopping destination.” (And this from The Gazette: “First, Bennigan’s arrived in Clarksburg. Malls may be next.”) Simon Property Group, one of the former owners of Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, would operate the retail complex, according to The Post. Shopping center developers are eying 40 acres of Clarksburg land Adventist HealthCare hopes to sell, The Washington Post reports. The story named Simon Property Group as a likely buyer, with Fairfax, VA-based Peterson Cos. listed as a competitor. The private school for boys will stay in Gaithersburg
Due to financial woes, The Avalon School will not move forward with plans to build a new campus in Clarksburg, school officials told The Gazette. The Avalon School, a Catholic private school for boys, will continue to operate out of First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg. In 2007, the school was granted a special exception to build on a 10-acre site on Frederick Road (Rt. 355). The site would have been composed of four buildings to accommodate 600 students, according to county planning records. But a sharp drop in enrollment and the failure to secure a construction bond made it "impossible" to repay a $2.2 million loan, school president Richard McPherson reportedly told The Gazette. Preliminary plans for an addition to the overcrowded Clarksburg High School are expected to go before Montgomery County Board of Education in early 2013, The Gazette reports. Clarksburg Principal James Koutsos told The Gazette that the two-story addition would ease “overflow” at the school, which is using 11 portable classrooms and may add one or two more next year. In November, the school board approved $11.8 million for the addition. Strong-Arm Robbery Suspects Sought Police said a male was beat up and robbed by five people in Germantown on Sautrday, Dec. 8. The attack was reported near Plummer and Fox Chapel drives at around 10:30 p.m., according to Montgomery County Police. A detailed description of the suspects—males, between the ages of 16 and 24—was unavailable. Police spokeswoman Rebecca Innocenti said the victim was approached by two suspects, who proceeded to beat him up. Innocenti said three others joined in the assault. Harris Teeter is coming to Clarksburg, several news outlets have reported. But two years ago, developers were ambivalent about building a Harris Teeter in Clarksburg, for fear that the Wegmans proposed for Germantown would siphon too many Clarksburg shoppers. Neighbors tell The Gazette the incident was one in a “long history” of incidents
The death of a group home resident in Clarksburg has heightened safety concerns among neighbors who tell The Gazette that complaints have been mounting for years. On Oct. 8, Montgomery County Police responded to reports of a man being violent and erratic at a residence on Tailor Shop Place, the site of an independent living program for people with disabilities, several media outlets have reported. According to The Gazette, Nathan Jones, 39, allegedly threatened two of his roommates with a knife and a hammer. Police claim Jones resisted arrest and had to be pepper sprayed. Crash occurred at Little Seneca Parkway and Frederick Roads in Clarksburg
(Updated 11:20 a.m.) CLARKSBUG — Four people were seriously injured in a crash in Clarksburg on Tuesday morning, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Asst. Chief Scott Graham told Patch. Around 7:22 a.m., emergency rescuers were dispatched to Little Seneca Parkway and Frederick Road, near Rocky Hill Middle School, to respond to a two-vehicle collision, according to Graham. Rescuers had to free an adult motorist from an overturned vehicle. Two children had to be flown to the hospital, Graham said. According to Graham, the crash victims were seriously injured, but those injuries were not considered life threatening.
