Monday, Jan. 21, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a countywide food drive to benefit Gaithersburg's Manna Food Center will be conducted at 27 Giant Food locations in Montgomery County on Saturday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 20. Victims were sprayed with fire extinguishers and then robbed of personal property Saturday near Gaithersburg middle and elementary schools, NBC Washington reported.
Three juveniles and an adult were arrested in two Gaithersburg robberies involving a fire extinguisher Saturday night, NBC Washington reported. The incidents happened minutes apart around 8 p.m. in the area of Gaithersburg Middle School and Gaithersburg Elementary School, according to the report. Police said the victims were sprayed with a fire extinguisher before the suspects robbed them, according to the report. All four suspects will be charged with armed robbery. Mayor Sidney Katz proclaimed the week of Oct. 21-27 to be Character Counts! week in the city of Gaithersburg.
Gaithersburg mayor Sidney A. Katz presented a proclamation Monday evening to Gaithersburg Elementary School principal Stephanie Brant, announcing National CHARACTER COUNTS! week for Oct. 21-27 in the city of Gaithersburg. "The CHARACTER COUNTS! program is an ethics education program that people of all cultures, races and religious affiliations can embrace," according to the city website. "We really do embrace the CHARACTER COUNTS! message we give to students each day," Brant said after receiving the proclamation on behalf of six other participating schools. The school provides Gaithersburg Elementary with Thanksgiving Food Baskets to help low income families who can't afford a big meal during the holiday season.
For many Gaithersburg Elementary School students, the prospect of not having a Thanksgiving meal is very real. Being a Title I school, 72 percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, Gaithersburg Elementary administrative assistant Rosa Baxter said, adding many of those students struggle to eat on weekends. But thanks to a longstanding partnership with Darnestown Elementary, many Gaithersburg children will enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.
